LYRICS OF THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM: ARISE O COMPATRIOTS
As aforementioned, our national anthem is a source of pride and hope for every Nigerian whether home or away but many people do not know how to recite it and sing along when it is played. As surprising as it may be, many graduates of top Nigerian universities and polytechnics do not know how to recite the national anthem and some of our international footballers who carry it wherever they go cannot sing it properly.
The reason why it is so is unknown but it can be really embarrassing when caught unawares and asked to recite the national anthem of Nigeria and someone who is expected to know it just keeps mute. What this article seeks to do is to provide the reader with the correct lyrics so that anyone who previously didn’t know the correct words of the “Arise O Compatriots” can look at the wording and sing along with the aim of mastering it by heart.
The “Arise O Compatriots” was adopted as our national anthem in 1978 and it was put to music by the Nigerian Police Band and directed by Benedict E. Odiase. In the Nigerian military, the first stanzaof the Nigerian national anthem is referred to as the General Salute, while the second stanza is known as the National Prayer. Many Nigerian graduates serving the country at NYSC orientation camps will understand these terms as well.
As a mark of respect to the country, whenever the Nigerian National Anthem is being sung, everyone is expected to rise and stand still, at attention. Certain events where the Arise O Compatriots is sung are at school assembly grounds, many official gatherings, sport events and military parades. Below are the lyrics of the Nigerian National Anthem:
Nigeria National Anthem Lyrics, Arise O Compatriots Stanza 1:
Arise, O compatriots
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labour of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom
Peace and unity.
Nigeria National Anthem Lyrics, Arise O Compatriots Stanza 2:
Oh God of creation
Direct our noble cause
Guide our leaders right
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace
And justice shall reign.
The Nigerian Plegde:
The Nigerian Pledge is recited immediately after the Nigerian National Anthem with the right hand on the chest. It was written by Prof. (Mrs.) Felicia Adebola Adedoyin in 1976.
I pledge to Nigeria my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest
To serve Nigeria with all my strength
To defend her unity, and uphold her honour and glory
So help me God.
