List of NUC Accredited Universities in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission was founded in the year 1962 initially as an advisory agency in the Cabinet Office. The organization later metamorphosed into a statutory body in 1974 and has since been a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME). Over the years, the NUC has evolved from being a small office in the cabinet office to a very important arm of the federal government of Nigeria in the area of development and management of university education in Nigeria.

Key Objectives of the National Universities Commission, NUC include the following:

  • Advice The Executive on the financial needs of universities
  • Coordinate the development of universities in Nigeria
  • Allocate and disburse federal grants and external aids to universities in Nigeria
  • Research and advice The Executive on topics relating to higher education development in Nigeria
  • Advice The Executive on creation of degree granting institutions
  • Advice the Federal Government on creation of faculties within Nigerian universities

Functions of the National Universities Commission, NUC include the following:

  • Granting approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities;
  • Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities;
  • Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities; and
  • Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities.

Having understood that the NUC is the main approving and ranking body for every university in the country, we will now look at the full list of accredited universities in Nigeria currently.
